Description

A VGA (Video Graphics Array) cable is a video connection cable used to transmit analog video signals from a computer, laptop, or other video source to a display device such as a monitor, TV, or projector. The term “VGA” refers to the long‑established video standard and connector first introduced in the 1980s that became widespread in PCs and displays.

VGA cables are known for their distinct 15‑pin D‑sub connector (also called DE‑15, HD‑15, or VGA connector) arranged in three rows of pins and typically colored blue on many devices.

Unlike modern digital standards like HDMI or DisplayPort, VGA carries analog video only (no audio).

Key Features of a VGA Cable

📺 1. Analog Video Transmission

  • Carries analog RGBHV video signals (red, green, blue, horizontal sync, vertical sync).
  • Used to display video on monitors, projectors, TVs, and other screens with VGA input.

🔌 2. 15‑Pin Connector

  • Features a 15‑pin D‑sub (DE‑15 / HD‑15) connector on each end.
  • Commonly male‑to‑male (plug to display device), but adapters/extension versions exist too.

🖥️ 3. Compatibility

  • Works with older computers, laptops, graphics cards, and legacy display equipment.
  • Still found on many business projectors and office monitors.

📊 4. Resolution Support

  • Can support a range of resolutions up to 1080p (1920 × 1080) on good‑quality cables, though image quality may degrade at higher resolutions or longer lengths due to analog signal limitations.

🔧 5. Passive & Adapter Types

  • VGA cables are available in various forms, including standard VGA‑to‑VGA, extension cables, and those paired with adapters to convert to digital formats like HDMI or DVI (often requiring active converters).

🚫 6. Video Only — No Audio

  • Does not transmit audio, so sound devices must be connected separately if needed.

📏 7. Cost‑Effective & Simple

  • Usually inexpensive and simple to set up — just plug into matching VGA ports on the devices.
  • No software/drivers needed.
